Frequently Asked Questions
What are your hours?
We are open Monday - Friday 8:00AM to 5:00PM.  We can make arrangements to stay later then 5:00PM to accommodate your schedule for pick-ups and drop-offs.  We also have a key drop box with envelopes for after hours.
Where are you located?
We are 1 block south of Forest Home Avenue on the west side of highway 100.  Approx. 2 blocks south of Holz Chevrolet.
How can I contact you?
The easiest way is by phone (414) 858-1188.  Our fax number is (414) 858-9066. You may also contact us by email.  For appointments, estimates and technical questions or to talk to a mechanic:Tim@tnstransmissions.com.  For accounting or business operation related questions:Sue@tnstransmissions.com.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes, we offer an 18 month or 18,000 mile warranty with every 2WD transmission overhaul.  For fleet vehicles, 4WD, All-Wheel Drive or diesel vehicles we offer a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty that covers both parts and labor.  We also offer the parts manufacturer's warranty of usually 1 year for smaller jobs we do.
How long will it take?
The length of time to repair your vehicle will be determined by the services we have to perform on it.  Smaller jobs we can usually complete in a day.  A major repair like a transmission overhaul or transfer case overhaul takes usually between 2-4 days, as long as the parts are available.
How much will it cost?
The price of your repair will be determined on what is exactly wrong with your vehicle.  Over the phone it can be difficult to tell you what is wrong, even if you are doing a fantastic job of imitating the growling and clunking noises your car is making.  We prefer to have you bring the vehicle in for diagnostics.  This way we can tell you what is wrong and the correct price to fix it.
Do you offer towing?
Yes, we do offer towing.  With a major repair we will include towing with no charge, otherwise a tow charge is around $65.00 as long as it's within a reasonable distance.
What types of payment do you accept?
We accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover Cards.  We also take cash and check (with a valid driver's license).
Do you do any other types of repairs?
We have the ability to do other small repairs on your vehicle granted we are not booked up with transmission overhauls.  Just give us a call and ask.  If there is something we can not accommodate for you, we'll be happy to refer you to someone who can.
What type of automatic transmission fluid does my car take?
Well, that all depends on the type of vehicle you may have.  If you own an automatic Chrysler product like Plymouth, Dodge, or Jeep you will need a synthetic ATF. These types of transmissions are very sensitive to the type of fluid that goes into them. If you own an automatic Ford product like Mercury or Lincoln made before 1999 you may use a regular ATF.  If it is a 1999 or newer Ford, you should use a synthetic ATF.  For General Motors vehicles like GMC, Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Geo, Oldsmobile
or Pontiac you can use a regular ATF, unless it is a newer model year.  To be certain you should refer to your vehicles manual, call us or call the dealership.  If you own aHonda, Volkswagen, or BMW vehicle be sure to purchase the automatic transmission fluid from the dealership.
What is a transmission tune-up?
A Transmission tune-up is a regular maintenance service just like an engine oil change.  You should make sure to replace the fluid along with the filter and gasket.  Most "Quick Lanes" or "Fast Lubes" will only exchange the fluid.  Here, at TNS Transmissions, we drop the transmission pan and replace the filter that is inside, and refill the fluid.  It usually takes about an hour to an hour and a half to complete.  Good thing though, we are right next door to a Culver's Restaurant and McDonald's.
What is a transmission overhaul or rebuild?
A transmission overhaul and a rebuilt transmission are the same thing.  When we tell you that we are going to do a full or complete rebuild that includes pulling the transmission out of your vehicle, tearing down the transmission and all the parts inside, cleaning your transmission in a parts washer, buying all new soft parts for inside the transmission (including all new electrical solenoids, switches, and relays that may be attached), then rebuilding your transmission and reinstalling it inside your vehicle.  We also replace the torque converter with every overhaul.  Our prices have the labor and parts already included.  Now please do not be fooled by businesses that will quote you a great low price!  There is a reason our prices are what they are. By the time we are done rebuilding your transmission and replacing all necessary parts, we may have over $800.00 worth of parts that went into it.  How would another other shop quote you only $900.00 to do the entire job then?  Also, be careful about the warranties you are given.  TNS Transmissions guarantees parts and labor for 18 months or 18,000 miles with every front wheel drive or rear wheel drive vehicle.  For fleet vehicles, four wheel drive or diesel we provide a 12 months or 12,000 mile warranty.  Remember,if the company that is rebuilding your transmission only gives you a 30 day warranty, that probably means they don't trust it to last much longer then 30 days, so why should you?
